The woman who taught France how to drink - The... →
thefoodoffrance: [Empress] Josephine was also a celebrated hostess and, although not a great drinker, a great collector of wine. The official inventory of her possessions at her death includes more than 13,000 bottles of wine from all over the world, from the Cape to Hungary to Champagne. Study of her 1814 “wine list” reveals something that may seem unsurprising but was, at that time,...

Theoretical Conversation Between A Grape & A Glass...
GRAPE: I see myself in you.
WINE: You remind me of my younger days.
GRAPE: I can't wait to grow up.
WINE: You'll regret what you become a part of.
GRAPE: At least I'll be a part of something.
WINE: You already are. You are better than me.
GRAPE: I can't see that. You are aged and wise.
WINE: You are helpful. I am destructive.
GRAPE: You give me a purpose.
WINE: I am merely a glimpse of your future.
GRAPE: A respected future.
WINE: I will cease to be soon. Cherish this time you have to grow.
GRAPE: I will, thank you. Your honesty astounds me.
WINE: The truth is in me.

How Do I Find The Right Wine Retailer For Me?
Nervous about wine stores: What's the best place for me to shop for wine?
Women & Wine: Do you live in a city with a lot of choices?
Nervous about wine stores: Yes. Big box stores, large and med-size retailers, grocery stores you name it.
Women & Wine: Where do you usually buy your wine?
Nervous about wine stores: Where ever I happen to be when I realize I need a bottle of wine or a gift.
Women & Wine: And are you happy about what you bring home.
Nervous about wine stores: Less than 50% of the time. Mostly it's 'just ok'.
Women & Wine: Do you buy your clothes at a store where you can get personalized attention?
Nervous about wine stores: Yes, I like someone else to give me an opinion about how something looks when I try it on.
Women & Wine: Yes, I like assistance too. That's why when I'm trying to find a place I like to shop for wine the first thing I do is this test. And you can do it too.
Nervous about wine stores: A test?
Women & Wine: Yes. I walk into the store. I stand about 5-8 feet from the register. I count 20-30 seconds. If I'm not approached by anyone I walk out.
Nervous about wine: Huh?
Women & Wine: When you walk into a store to buy clothes, how long does it usually take before someone says, "can I help you"?
Nervous about wine stores: about a half a minute
Women & Wine: So I compare and find a store I like to buy wine in the same way I buy anything else. Unless I have a coupon, or a flyer that brings me in for a particular selection - I want to shop at a place where I can develop a relationship with the person who is selling me the wine.
Nervous about wine stores: Well that makes sense.
Women & Wine: Yes it does. The same way you would have a favorite hair cutter or florist, you should have a trusted source where you can go to buy wine who can assist you with your purchase in the price range you want to spend. It's that simple.
Nervous about wine stores: I have two in my neighborhood. I'm going to put them to the test on my way home today.
Women & Wine: Let me know how it goes...and let me know if you liked them better than the ones that you've been bringing home - in the same price range.

What wine are you drinking this Thanksgiving? And...
I’m asked this question a lot. Mostly because the holiday is filled with so many different flavors on our table - and partly because when you’re having a group it’s sometimes difficult to know how much wine to buy for a crowd. So let’s cut to the easy part first. My first response when asked how much to buy begins with another question - buffet or courses for service of...
